On January 29,2016 a Ceremony was conducted at the Carter County Sheriff’s Office. During this ceremony the Oath of Office for Deputy Sheriff was administered to eleven new Deputies and Awards were given to Deputies being recognized for outstanding service.
This ceremony was very special to the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office since during this single ceremony new officers were indoctrinated to the challenge of the Oath of Office. These young Deputies then watched as Deputies who had taken the same oath were awarded for living up to this Oath during the recent violent event on 16 December 2015.
The Carter County Sheriff, Dexter Lunceford, presented the Hostile Action Award to Lt Michael Bean,Sgt David Caldwell, Deputy Jenna Markland, Lt Jeffery Markland, Deputy Jason Mosier, and the members of the Carter County Sheriff’s S.W.A.T. Team. Deputy Jenna Markland was also presented with the Order of the Purple Heart award. The awards presented to these Officers were in recognition of their actions on the night of December 16, 2015, during which the Sheriff and Deputies had 50-60 shots fired at them and during which Deputy Jenna Markland was wounded.
